Demons

A Tale of Time Travel

Attempt #06: Four lives lost. No one on the team made it back alive. Again. They tried their best to negotiate, to save us, but alas, humans can be the most inhumane when they want to.

Attempt #58: Another failed attempt. Our real time video feed shows the preparators are too hostile to reason verbally. But combative attempts prove futile given their superior weaponry.

Attempt #71: Too many lives lost. We don’t know how much longer we can go on.

I sighed, closing the record journal with a decisive thud. Why were we even trying anymore? It was obvious nothing could be done. Our ancestors have already tried everything they could, and nothing has changed the future.

“Giving up already?” My dear friend, and colleague asked.

I shrugged. “What’s the point? We’ve tried pretty much everything we could, and nothing seems to have worked.”

“Whatever happened to heroism and saving humanity?”

I shook my head. “When you told me we were trying to prevent the end of humanity by altering the future, I thought we’d be preventing a meteor crash, or preparing for a natural disaster, or something like that. I didn’t realise the end of humanity meant the end of everything that makes humans human. They look like us, but I wouldn’t call them humans. They’re fucking demons!” I burst out, glaring up at him.

This time, he was the one who shrugged. “Angels and demons, they live within us. We simply have to remind them of that,” he said, making me sigh. As annoying as he was, he was also right.

But maybe, we’d been going about this all wrong. If we really wanted to prevent the end of humanity, maybe we should start from before things started going wrong instead of the very end.
